Supporting the Worker in Mentoring Sessions

  • Support, in practical terms means agreeing to a schedule of meetings as frequently as may seem necessary. It is also useful to agree methods for impromptu meetings or appropriate contact times and methods of effective communication that enable the mentee to effectively deal with any urgent or unforeseen challenges.
  • The way in which the Mentor provides guidance and information is critical. Timing, pace and level of are obviously important. Overcoming the inherent danger of imposing the Mentor's natural preferences must be guarded against. Above all, the avoidance of bias of all kinds and remaining objective whilst remaining fully involved is one of the greatest challenges.
  • When asked to provide advice and make suggestions the key is to ensure that the correct information is divulged and unnecessary, or uncalled for information is not imposed on the mentee in an attempt to be helpful. A Mentor is not expected to be the source of all knowledge and information and they should be quite willing to direct mentees to alternative and perhaps more appropriate sources.
  • A key role for the Mentor is to help mentees to effectively deal with mistakes and setbacks reducing or completely negating the feeling of inadequacy. The Mentor relationship should be non-judgmental and "risk-free". This allows the Mentor to help the mentee to treat mistakes and setbacks as real learning opportunities. Properly handled, these situations are often rich learning experiences.
  • At all times the Mentor should try to build self-confidence and motivation in the mentee in order to develop a positive attitude and a will to complete the tasks at hand.
